View Full Version : Thanksgiving lesson learned...

I hydroplaned my car into the curb going 35 Tuesday night in Bakersfield on a right-hand bend. A 325i in front of me also hydroplaned through the turn causing me to slam the brakes  I had time to try to fix the slide and straighten the steering, but it just kept sliding. I got on the e-brake to get it a little sideway because i was heading straight into the side of a building. Luckily it shimmied sideways enough that the front bumper is fine and didnt jump the curb and hit the building, but it ended up making the rear-left also slam into the curb.
I was the second accident in 2 hrs. on the same turn and, having my car like a sitting duck on the side of a busy road with cars hydroplaning just like me, I had to stand there helpless hoping no one would slam into my car. Luckily, nothing else happened.
Damage report: bent subframe, shot front assembly (not sure about the strut yet), snapped front control arm..bent rear, left wheels are completely done (bittersweet) no pics because my camera got damaged in the accident somehow.
All my savings for mods are now going to have to go to repairs :cussing:
Lesson learned: be thankful for what u have.

no insurance? you should be able to pay the deductible and get it fixed since it was caused due to the rain?
so sorry to hear that....ouch!
maybe you can go to the gun metal rims now??....
so the rule is in rain and hydroplaning, no breaks right?

we're hoping insurance doesn't end up totaling the car because the parts/labor are probably gonna be like 1/2 the worth of the whole car :(
and yeah, hopefully i can get some new wheels

usually for cars its totaled if frame itself is bent/tweaked. or two cost EXCEEDS value, not 50% not 80% but EXCEEDS value

Thanks laidback. I was going to have it towed there, but since we brought it to our local shop the night of the accident, our insurance company says the adjuster has to look at the car there before it can go anywhere else. im gonna try to get it back down to la on monday after he comes.

I do have insurance and the adjuster took a look and ended up totaling the car, but the damage estimate was only $5k when he estimated the value of the car at $9400. I talked to Nath and he gave me some really helpful advice. Now I just need to clear things up with insurance so i can get it to C&C and start the repairs.

Sorry to hear about the loss. Good luck with everything.
I found an interesting article about totalling on msnbc.com
"Some companies total vehicles at 51% of its actual worth; some total at 80%. The insurance company will pay you the car's actual cash value, minus any deductible on your coverage. Then the car goes to a salvage yard, where it's auctioned off to the highest bidder and usually chopped up for parts. The insurance company keeps whatever money it got for the car in salvage."

sorry for being MIA for so long. the internet at my apt. has been working on/off, but im in bako until February now. but yes, as LB said i got a black on black '99 m3. My other car was beginning to have some engine issues since it has 173,000 on it. I decided it would just be better to invest my mod money on whole newer car instead of fixing it up.
It's bittersweet...I'm really really sad to have to let her go...but im excited to put my own touch on my new baby :) and get rolling again.

I had Falken ze-502's but they were bearly worn. The main cause was my sudden braking and the fact that my ASC and ABS light was on...

Thanks for the link and info. My adjuster was kinda retarded and gave me a preliminary estimate that was ridiculous, but it ended up making sense.
