What BMW AG emailed me:
"The BMW 2002 US VIN 1664122 was manufactured on November 26th, 1968 and delivered on December 10th, 1968 to the importer BMW Concessionaires G.B. in London (Great Britain). The original colour was Chamonix, paint code 085."
2002 roundel on the left. Middle is the original one from my first car, '91 735i (Alpine White on Black Leather). Right is a modern plastic one I have as a backup for the E46

temporary back seat from an E30, original back seat needs to be re-upholstered (earlier today when the sun was out)
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c288/jhermes/2002/backseat.jpg
We then drove it to the gas station and filled it up. Stopped at CVS for smokes and drinks. Car was 3/3 on start-up with the new plugs, before it was like "do I really want to start up?"

lots more to come, going to try to spray a coat of primer to at least protect the body but that means I need to get home while the sun is out. Hopefully I'll get a chance in the next few days.
If anybody has parts for a 2002 (or even a 1602) please let me know.

Thanks everybody. It's definitely gonna be a work in process for a while.
Also, if anybody happens to run across a MATCHING SET of black plates please let me know ASAP. Problem is they have to be the correct sequence for 1969, so first letter should be a Z (ZCP or ZHP would be sick!). They won't be cheap so don't worry, just let me know if you find them.
If it comes down to it I can always get a 'Historical Vehicle' plate.

nice... my buddy has like 7 2002s... most of them came from the UK and surrounding parts of Europe but all of them were restored completely and run flawless.
this is definitely going to be a fun project.

Any chance he has some spare parts? I'm sure I'm gonna have a list of things I'll need. Off the top of my head I first want some of the vertical slats for the kidney grill (I have the actual grill)

ok, some new pictures
apparently this is what it looked like a while ago, stupid PO sent the black plates in to the DMV and they were destroyed. Interesting that it had frenched lights... (is it a sign?)

so today we tried to change the brake and clutch fluid. Luckily a friend of mine let me borrow his low-profile jack as the one we had didn't work (another issue with one of the PO's, we think a kid owned the car in the 80s... cut springs)
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c288/jhermes/2002/P1000902.jpg
jack on frame rail plus 2 jack stands just in case... and we chocked the passenger side rear wheel as both driver's side wheels were off the ground.
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c288/jhermes/2002/P1000903.jpg
yeah, we need a new complete exhaust system. F the old one.
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c288/jhermes/2002/P1000904.jpg
maybe some race headers too...

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c288/jhermes/2002/P1000906.jpg
oh look... no guard on the flywheel. stupid PO :nono:

found it in the trunk, back on
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c288/jhermes/2002/P1000918.jpg
Steve bleeding the clutch fluid. Right after this picture was taken we realized the seal on the slave cylinder is bad, looks like time for a new one.
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c288/jhermes/2002/P1000912.jpg
while bleeding the brake fluid we realized the seals on the reservoir are bad. Luckily those were ordered the other day so they should be in on Tuesday. Gave up on the brake system for now.
the craptastic caps on the reservoir, middle one is fine; it's just the outer ones that are bad.
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c288/jhermes/2002/IMG_2557.jpg
Funny thing though, we got some BBQ sauce caps to fit on temporarily until I can grab some new ones on Monday from LJ Independent BMW (they have them in stock)

I guess I haven't updated this in a few weeks...
I called BBS and they claim I can get these RF's (15x6) to fit, but I might need Aplina fender flares. If I go flared I might try to get some 15x7 or 8 rears
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b267/ajp00006/bbs_rf__bs_ci3_l.jpg
they will go with the Wilwood BBK

picked up correct passenger door inner handle ($10) from Autobahn and some freebies from LJ Independent (slave cylinder pushrod + new brake fluid reservior). A package came in w/new VCG, e-brake cables, 4 brake hoses, temperature sender, fuel filter, exhaust hangers and some other stuff, I can't remember right now. Also took of Solex carb and rebuilt it.

at some point soon we're going to have to make some new rear cards, will deal with that when we have time.
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c288/jhermes/2002/8f62896b.jpg
so we got the new slave in, but we're having sync problems. Need to find a clutch rebuild kit but the problem is because of the build date (11/68) we can't find the right one. Our fall back plan if we can't find one is to start searching for an E21 5-speed for swap
