Wow Randy did you trade the Land Rover? X5 looks sick!

Thanks, the X5 is nice and smooth for the family. Does everything fairly well. Not the rocket I was hoping for, but no slouch either. Plenty of power for my wife's daily driver. Engine and exhaust actually sound fairly throaty. Too much weight to haul serious a$$ from a dig, but a good cruiser at speed.

Not as sporty as the Cayenne S it replaces, but significantly more comfortable and also more space in the second row and the cargo area.

Haven't tested the X5 on the trails yet, the Cayenne S went everywhere...

Obviously the X5 is more of a street machine, so it'll likely not see much more than a paved fire road.

Be sure to shoot pics if you ever decide to take her on the trails. Those pics of your Cayenne playing in the dirt are cool. Don't see that very often.

I think you might get a kick out of this one, then...

Tight squeeze for the overnight trips, but doable...

4 years and 60,000 miles later, this was the Cayenne S at sale.

Mechanically sound and Physically perfect, verified by Porsche specialists. The Porsche Paint was the best and strongest I have ever seen. I know the Cayenne is not the favorite of most Porsche purists, but I have to say, I was overall very impressed. The main capability limitation, I found, was that even though I bought a spare set of 18 inch wheels, and Pirelli Scorpion tires, the overall wheel diameter was just too small. On an overnighter through Old Mojave Road, I actually sidewall traumatized two tires. Let me just say, it is definitely no fun trying to change a wheel offroad in the dirt, with a vehicle this big and heavy. Another thing is, the brakes and parts are generally quite expensive. So, with scheduled maintenance included through BMW, much as I had fun with the Cayenne, we decided to go for the X5 4.8i this time around.

In my earlier days of "offroading" I didn't know a lot about proper technique and approach angles, etc.

The Cayenne S made it through just fine, but of course, now, I would never enter a mud pit at speed, since it can create a bow of water over the hood. (As pictured, fortunately, no bad impact, water just dripped off)

The funny thing about the Cayenne S is that people are curious and some might even want you to fail - they would just love to have you sit there in the middle of a mud pit surrounded by Fords, Chevys, and Jeeps. Fortunately, she never let me down, with the exception of some tire damage. And a nice driver on the streets and highways to and from the various OHV areas. Definitely not a hard core off road vehicle, but more capable than most might think. Porsche does build their vehicles well, from what I can tell.

I'm a much kindler, gentler, smoother, off roader these days.

How is the new X5 compared to the Cayenne?

How is the new X5 compared to the Cayenne?

I really liked the sporty feel of the Cayenne S handling and suspension, and the brake feel was superb.

The new X5 4.8i is the better family car for us, with more cargo and interior space, a softer, yet still capable suspension, and some newer technology. I miss the Cayenne S, but we'd simply outgrown it.

Paint and finish was superior on the Cayenne S, but the BMW feels more similarly refined in all other aspects. The Cayenne S did have some minor growing pains, and the BMW has been problem free. Hard to beat the included maintenance on the X5 also, and the Cayenne S was no bargain to maintain.

When both the X5 and the Cayenne came up for their redesigns, I felt more progress was made by the X5, and decided to give it a shot, and it's been very nice.

The redesign of the X5 brought about the double wishbone front suspension, first non-strut suspension in a long long time. We still have the factory run flats, since we've had the vehicle less than a year, but the ride is still surprisingly smooth.

Yeah, I didn't see much significant change at all in the Cayenne.
