It made me want to keep it as long as I can because it's the last of it's kind. It's very spacious and comfy for long drives and if I want to be an a-hole driver, I'll just hit that M button and voilą I'm flying!:D

Then matte clearcoat it and you almost have frozen grey :)

Two different beast and i love them both:drool:, an E39 non Supercharged the E60 M5 takes it but Supercharged and heavily modded E39 M5 can give the E60 a run for its money:)

question : can you tell me how SMG actually works in some situations ... like , when you are at the stop (light) in drive position without puting the foot on brake or throtle , how the car stay still ? ( the clutch is auto pushed in this situation?) and then if you wanna go and step the gas , it engages the cluch immediately or what?
or if you are on a hill stopped and release the brake , the car will roll down?
the clutch disengage when you step the brake? or on what situations?
i think you understand what i mean , please tell me if you know , i'm wondering if a SMG could be as practical as an automatic transmission (torque converter) in the city and no racing situation
Laidback
11-25-2010, 10:17 PM
When your on the manual mode (and on higher gear) and you slow down to a stop the gear automatically goes to Second and on full stop goes to first without downshifting iirc...
When your on a full stop the clutch give u a second or two before the clutch engages (so your car won't roll down the hill) and the car will roll down after...
SMG is for sure way better than automatic though they have some similarities...but SMG takes it, easily:goldcup:
Hope this helps

SMG, to me, is like manual without the clutch.
Clutch is electronically operated.
Treat it like a manual, BUT IT'S NOT MANUAL.
On traffic lights, SMG cars rolls back and forward just like manual cars. :)

i was afraid to dont stop the engine when i full stop , i understand now , i think they made a system for disengaging the clutch when the car stops and engage back when you hit the throttle .
one more : i saw that there is a full automatic mode , in the crowded city i think this is the best way to drive , but in this mode , when you kick down the car shift back and shift for itself at the right time without me using the paddles ? )
thanks guys for the lessons :D

Yes and no.
It's all preference.
During my first few months of owning an SMG car, I never used the automatic mode at all.
For your info, Los Angeles has one of the worst traffic in the nation.
The car has no problem staying at 4000-5000 rpm, heck ///M cars have high rpm.
Of course, I don't do that. I switch the gears manually when I think it's the right time.
Yes, in automatic mode, the car will shifts its gear by itself.
It's all depends on the verocity level of your SMG.
5th for switching by itself at high rpm, approximately 4000 rpm.
1st for switching at approximately 2000 rpm.
However, don't get mixed up.
Automatic mode might seems like the car operates like a automatic cars.
But it actually switches gear like a manual car without you changing the gears.
You can feel it especially when you put the verocity at level 1.
I'm not sure if you understand my point, but hope this helps.
Btw, what kind of car do you drive?

i drive an e39 528i manual but who knows maybe in the close future i will afford an e46 m3 smg or e60 :D .
i only want to know about the SMG better as i love these cars :) , and yes , i got your point ;) , very useful , thanks

If you are driving uphill, and there is a stop sign at the top of the hill, Just stop at the top of the hill as you normally would. Before you take your foot off of the brake pedal, pull the "-" or downshift paddle back towards you, and it will hold the car right where it is without rolling back down the hill. Beware, it will only hold you there for about 2 seconds, but works well so you don't roll back into somebody while waiting for the clutch to engage.
