Here's the solution...

There is a company called sybesmas that will replace your mirror for $75 plus shipping. They are a mirror manufacturing company.

Call them at 616-392-6911.

The story goes: the company that actually first manufactured the mirrors in our cars is called Magna Donnelly and they had been replacing the mirrors for free until fairly recently. Now if you call them they tell you to call Sybesmas. Then this other mirror supply company picked up the job by starting this program. They recognized that there was such an issue and demand that they could offer an inexpensive solution to our problem. They are quite used to this, and will email you everything you need to know. You have to take off the mirror, take pictures of it, and fill out a form. If you are lucky enough to have a white sticker on your mirror you are golden because they use that for your part number. Otherwise they need all pictures requested. They can not use the part number from BMW.

The email you receive will look like this:

<<<
The cost for a mirror exchange is $75.00 plus shipping/handling to the
United States. If you reside outside of the USA, please contact us for
pricing. You will be required to return the defective mirror and a pre-paid
label will be provided for you to do so.

Please note that we do not support mirrors with the home link option.

The attached form will need to be completed and pictures of the following
will need to be included for us to determine what mirror it is that you are
in need of.

-Front and rear views of the mirror
-The plug (number of pins and wire colors are helpful)
-The mounting bracket located on the windshield

You may send payment via email when your order is submitted otherwise, we
will contact you when you mirror is ready to ship for that information.

Do not open the black casing surrounding the mirror as this will cause
damage and the unit will no longer be valuable as an exchange and you will
be charged the full purchase price of $200.00.

thanks to J-son from E46 fanatics for the post.

Some of the oval rear view mirror (mostly on the E39 M5 and E46 M3), started to have some issues such as leaking fluid inside, the auto dimming feature is not working...and Magna donelly who manufactured this mirrors stepped up and did an exchange program till they moved it to a different company Sybesmas...

That's fascinating... I didn't realize there was fluid in those mirrors. Hm, +1 for learning something new? lol

Mine got fried when doing the recent recall work done... luckily the dealer replaced it for free, especially before it started spitting fluid all over the interior as I have read about in other people's cars.

Just had to contact Sybsmas for a mirror exchange. You first have to contact them(Stacy), they will email you a form to complete, and specific instructions. Note, they do not exchange mirrors with HomeLink built into the mirror(This means having buttons on the mirror). If the garage door opening buttons are on the center lighting console, you are good to go. You will need to take pictures of the mirror including the wiring harness to include with your form.

IMPORTANT REMOVAL/REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS
1. There are two black cover shells which easily pull off the back of the mirror
2. Once the plastic covers are removed, it is time to remove the mirror by TWISTING the mirror "stalk" from the 6 O'clock to towards the 3 o'clock position. DO NOT pull the mirror but use a twisting motion.
3. Once the mirror is disconnected, uncouple the wiring connector.
4. This process should take about 3-5 minutes at the most.

REPLACEMENT
1. Connect the wiring connector from the mirror to the one on the windshield
2. Align the mirror connector starting 3-4 o'clock position and rotate towards the 6 o'clock position.
3. Repalce the 2 plastic black cover shells onto the back of the mirror assembly.
4. This process should take 3-5 min max. Now, you are done.
5. Send your failed mirror back to them.

GO HAVE A 'COLD ONE"
