From what I heard you need to adjust the slip ring in order to fit a Stage 2 Airbag to a stage 1 car, but then I again I drive a 7 and not an e39. Might be different.

not required...saw Qais simply putting the plugs in with no changes...purely a PnP...and I have a 99 getting 03 treatment...

That's actually the OEM Nokia Cellphone in place.

so from my understanding a stage 2 steering wheel can fit a stage 1 equipped vehicle ?

bump, just bought a e46 m3 steering wheel, what now?

i heard you need to discount the battery and when you install the wheel you'll get a airbag sensor light being on but you have to reset it, this true?

also do i need to buy any special plugs?

nope, not plug and play unless you have a car that is 99+

thats because your car is a 99, your previous airbag was a 2 stage. i hope he didnt charge you more than half hour of labor. because all he did was remove 1 bolt, and plug in 2 things.

so from my understanding a stage 2 steering wheel can fit a stage 1 equipped vehicle ?

im assuming your car is a 97/98 if thats the case then you cannot retrofit the new 01+ wheel in and keep your airbag. simply because the new ones are dual stage and yours is a single stage.

it has been done though, but at the cost of hacking up airbag wiring, and losing one of the stages on the new airbags.

is it worth it? your life, your life, you decide.

nope i'm not keeping my airbag......i read that it'll work just as if it were still a stage 1 other then a stage 2.....i've had previous cars that i was involved in an accident and the airbag never went off so i dunno....my other idea was to modify the current sterring wheel if it's possible

the airbags deploy when you have extreme accidents, or sudden jolts.

if it were me id keep my airbags instead of looking cool.

alrighty.

i spoke to qais from southbay auto right now and he tells me that going from a stage 1 to stage 2 is a no go, i'll have a airbag light and no working airbag so no idea how others have done this before

you cut up the airbag wiring and wire it at a high stage only. no shop will do that because of the risk involved so you're on your own.

Sobi actually put one of our Competition steering wheels for the E46 in his E39, maybe you're interested in doing the same:

I actually just ordered the M-Sport wheel with button deletes installed for my 528i with the airbag. I should get it in another week. I've read a lot of stuff regarding the single stage and dual stage setups and I don't think the coding in the SRS system for a single stage is compatible with the dual stage. That's at least from what I've read.

Absolutely. I'm probably going to make a DIY video for this install. It will be my first time doing a steering wheel swap but I know it's all PnP. I'm going to relocate my cruise control buttons to my ash tray in the center console (going to make it look custom of course) and I'm not worrying about audio controls since my aftermarket headunit is not compatible without another module which I honestly don't care too much about.
