So... I'm contemplating financing an HPF Stage 1 Turbo kit. But I live in Ca. and want to run cats. Has anyone on here done this, and if so, what did it take?
Thanks

Do you need to take the cats off for Stage 1?So... I'm contemplating financing an HPF Stage 1 Turbo kit. But I live in Ca. and want to run cats. Has anyone on here done this, and if so, what did it take?

Without crazy crazy custom mid section I believe so, the down pipe deletes the cats. Haven't found anybody runnin cats with HPF.

Im sure there's not much power difference from running cats (but then again i maybe wrong)...Without crazy crazy custom mid section I believe so, the down pipe deletes the cats. Haven't found anybody runnin cats with HPF.

can you put cats further down flow in the exhaust system?

If you remember from our tour Steve Dinan said it was probably 20-30 extra HP. But that's not what I'm concerned about. No cats is illegal in CA, even moving the cats from OEM position is illegal. But if you have cats moved down stream at least you could pass smog, and it would take a very observant smog shop to notice the cats are moved.

Yeah, pretty crowded under there though, I imagine it'd be an expensive custom job. That's why I wanted to see if anybody's done it, and if so what it took.

Phil!!! whatsup!
Kit is illegal regardless if it has cats or not lol. Let me know if you are serious about getting the kit. We are going to be setting a couple of cars up HPF style.:p

That is exactly what I did on my E46. Headers with 200 cell cats a little further back and the stock length ox senson fit. The first muffler shop I went to removed the cats and the car smelled very bad and was not acceptable to me. Go with 100 or 200 cell racing type cats and keep the aor clean as well. I have a great muffler shop but it is down in LA Chatsworth area Royal Muffler.
Good luck with the power up upgrade

Grab some random technology cats and throw them in. The cop isn't going to know what is oem and what isn't.

running hpf stg2 with no cats and daily drive the car everyday.
WHy don't you ask Dave at HPF if you can run cats?
the only area you'll probably be able to mount cats are on the section 2 piping, no space in the section 1 area since the downpipe, turbo, and other plumbing are in that area.

I called HPF, they said they weren't aware of anybody running cats with their kits, didn't really know exactly what it would take to do it. I'm thinking it may be possible but wildly expensive on top of an already pricey turbo kit.

A buddy of mine was I believe the first HPF M3, initially he ran the car with cats and then later switched to catless, and is now a 2.5 setup. But from what I was told they do rob quite a bit of power with cats on this setup. Catless is your best and it appears your only option.

If you have to run cats I would also have to agree that section 2 is the easiest place to add them since there is the most space ( I deleted my resonators from my oem section 2 thats why I know)
Your best bet is to purchase a used section 2 (got mine from hpf) and put cats in there. That way you can have the option to switch out if you like. :D
I think I read somehwere on e46fanatics saying cats made 20-40rwhp less.

Why dont you just ask hpf Im pretty sure theyll tell you whats up. And yeah the kit isnt illegal it just cant pass smog hahaha... So either way your going to have to go to smog place and pay them off... Oh and one more thing california is going to start having police officers carry around a sniffer for your exhaust so they can see if your car is smog approved....
