Ok.... so i'm in the market for a new hand held camera as well as a few lenses for my Digital Rebel XT...
I wanted to see what everyone recommends: I'm really looking into the Canon Powershot SX20 as the handheld
as for the lenses... i don't want to spend LOADS of cash since it's just a hobby. I was really interested in the EF 50mm F1.8 II (for a cheap FAST lens) and the Canon 17-40mm F4.0 L USM AF (Ultra Wide Zoom) or possibly the Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM (Standard Zoom).
Unless someone is selling an old L-series Standard zoom... i know Stean had a lens a few months back but i'm sure they're long gone :(

for handheld, I really like the Canon S90
for lenses, the 50mm is great for the money. Very sharp. As for the standard zooms, personally, I would save up for a better L zoom. They hold their value a lot better and the image quality is a lot better.

Get a 10-20 lens for wide angle :)

I shot all the Aston Martin Rapide photos with my wife's S90. The only thing I don't like about it, is it is really easy to unintentionally move the dials and knobs.

Canon 17-40mm is a great lens for the money.
The 50mm f/1.4 is really nice if you have the money, but the 50mm f/1.8mm II can get the job done also, but feels like a toy and bokeh not as nice. I've used both.

well looks like general opinion is to get a new lens...
i've seen 10-22 EF-S, 17-40L, or 24-70L...
i know you've shot more than a few lenses Randy.. should i stick with ultra wide zoom or go for the standard zoom?

Depends what you like, as well as the camera body / sensor size. (Sorry, just seeing this thread now...)
If I was shooting a crop frame sensor, I'd probably go with the 10-22 EF-S, since it's fun to be able to shoot wide.
For full frame, the 24-70L is a wonderful lens. I'd sell my 16-35mm before giving up my 24-70L.
Hope you were able to pick up a new lens.
My newest lens is the rather brick-like 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II. Sold my 70-200mm f/4 IS. Complete opposite of a wide angle zoom, yet still versatile and definitely fun to shoot with.

For handheld, I picked up the new Panasonic LX-5, and highly recommend it.
Here's a snapshot straight out of the camera, JPEG. (Nothing special in this image, but a nice all around camera).
