What does a spun rod bearing get you?

A scarred crank and a new adventure. :thumbsup2:

Saturday afternoon was the day we were supposed to finish my car. Fine tuning on the dyno. It was going very well all day up untill around 3 o'clock. We did probably 9-10 hard pulls all the way to red line. After the last pull, we shut the car off and started it back up. Upon start up, we heard an ear piercing noise that sounded like a spun bearing. Clack, clack, clack...

That was the end of that. Monday morning comes and I call up the dealership and order some bearings. Wednesday comes around and the dealer calls to say they have arrived. Ok, this is where the fun starts. Tonight I decided to begin the teardown to replace the rod bearings. It's a pain in the ass by the way... We checked the connecting rods for play and sure enough, the number 5 rod had massive play. We removed the cap and pulled off the bearings. This is when I knew I wouldn't get to drive my m3 for a while... Turns out the spun bearing scarred the crank badly. Looks like I'm going to need a new crankshaft. After about 5 minutes of deliberation, we decide to build the motor.

The build will consist of:

RMS low compression pistons
Pauter rods
Euro s50 3.2 crankshaft
V2-T trim supecharger
8 rib pulley setup for 17 psi
Methanol Injection
RMS Big tube headers (1 3/4" primaries)
Custom exhaust from the headers back
Sachs Racing clutch
Possibly some bigger brakes

I'll keep this thread updated with pictures and more info as it unfolds. The down side, I need to get some cash together quick if I want to get this done in a reasonable amount of time.

Wish me luck!

very nice... i've ben waiting to see someone doing it the right way.

lower the compression and turn up the boost. i don't know the stock specs of the head but i noticed you aren't doing any modification to the head to strengthen it. any specific reason why not?

also noticed you aren't "bullet-proofing" the block... again i don't know much about the interior workings of BMW motors so i don't know how strong the block itself is.

can't wait to see this unfold and the amount of power the car will be putting down at 17psi...

There's no need to modify the head at this time. maybe later on down the road I'll open her up but for now it's good. Also, the block is strong enough to hold the power I'm shooting for. The weak points are the pistons and rods. I'm stoked. I have the pistons. I just need to pick up the rods and upgrade the blower to a t trim.

Here's a little update for you guys.

I received the new crankshaft. I ended up purchasing an s54 crank because I could not source a euro crank and I didn't want to wait. :D

The pistons we ordered were 8.5:1 and I wanted 9.5:1 in order the keep some of the low end power. I hear from a lot of people that the lower compression really flattens out the power band down low. I'd like to stay away from that. The wrong pistons will be kept for another project down the line. The 9.5:1 pistons are about 4 weeks away. I'll be placing the order for the rods tomorrow. Next week I will purchase all the necessary gaskets for an engine rebuild.

In the mean time, I have been working on the hats and brackets for the big brake kit. I'm using wilwood W6a calipers up front and W4a calipers in back. Let me know if you guys want more details on the brakes.

Here's some pictures!

Sorry guys... Ended up moving the pics and didn't update the links.

Here's some more photos! I didn't take any pics of the oil pan coming out because this was supposed to be a standard rod bearing replacement.

Here you can see how the heat affected the bearing.

This is the scoring that affected the crank

You can see the tang was broken off due to the bearing spinning in the rod.

Here's an update for you guys.

Pistons FINALLY arrived from arias.

Specs:
Compression Ratio 9.0:1
Weight 353g
Ceramic Coated tops
Moly Coated Skirts

These are some quality pistons. It was deffinitely worth the wait. I'm still waiting to order the rods. I need to save up a little more cash. This project is moving slowly due to cash flow issues on my end, but when it is finished, it will be one hell of a car. :excited:

Enjoy!

Ok, we finished fitting the headers and they're off to be finalized. We pulled the motor and we have began disassembly. Hoping to have the engine fully disassembled by tonight. :D

Here are some pictures of the motor coming out.

I saw you removed the Idle Air Control Valve. Did you just remove it for engine teardown or are you going to go with a mechanical throttle and get rid if the EGR/IACV?

It was removed only for engine teardown purposes. Everything is going to be put back together exactly how it was. I am not going to be modifying the throttle bodies or anything of that sort.
