(from BMW Press Release) The new BMW X5 4.8i M Sport comes equipped with 19-inch V-spoke M light alloy wheels, Sports suspension, M Aerodynamic body styling, Sports seats, matt aluminium surround to the side window frames, high-gloss Shadowline roof rails, Anthracite headlining and M leather steering wheel. Customers wishing to further differentiate their cars can also choose to upgrade to 20-inch M V-spoke light alloy wheels.

The introduction of M Sport to the BMW X5 range has been eagerly awaited by buyers as 90 per cent of the previous models sold were specified as a Sport.

The new BMW X5 4.8i M Sport will be available in six colours: Alpine White, Black Sapphire, Carbon Black, Monaco Blue, Space Grey, Titanium Silver. Inside and Nevada leather upholstery is standard and is available in Black, Grey, Beige and Saddle Brown hues. Dark Walnut interior trim is standard on the X5 4.8i M Sport but customers can specify Brushed Aluminium, Dark Bamboo or Light Poplar at no additional cost.

Power for the car comes from a 4,799cc engine fitted with Bi-VANOS and VALVETRONIC variable valve technologies to produce 355hp. The advanced engine is capable of propelling the car from zero to 62mph in 6.5 seconds before going on to a top speed of 150mph. The 4.8-litre powerplant still records 22.6mpg on the combined cycle and emissions of 299g/km – both figures that better rival products from Porsche and Audi.

The introduction of a new variant to the X5 range comes as the sales figures reveal that the model is exceeding original expectations. Customer demand for the BMW X5 means the model is forward sold until the end of 2007. The 3.0-litre diesel engined variant is still the most popular X5 accounting for more than 90 per cent of orders.

The BMW X5 4.8i M Sport costs £53,440 OTR. M Sport will be offered on 3.0d and 3.0si models later in 2007 and further details will be announced nearer the time.

Basically other than the colors & interior, that's what we have with our Dinan 4.4i!

Add Dinan Throttle Bodies, Intake, Exhaust & Software and you got the same for an older X5 (which IMO looks better anyway)!

According to Roundel, article paraphrased, after a decade of saying they would never do it, BMW M is developing two SUV (or SAV) based models, X5 M and X6 M. Prototypes exist and have been tested on the 'Ring since July. 500 hp version of the N63 twin turbo. Expected to hit the market in early 2010.

i see them making the X6 "M" the competition to the AMG's and porsche's while they will keep the X5 as their "mommy car" just given the nature in which the two vehicles styling and handling abilities dictate currently.

Finally gotta answer to the Porsche GTS and Cayenne Turbo, I guess.

The X6 looks good, but I can't wrap my arms around it, since it just seems a tremendous sacrifice in the name of styling for the back seats and cargo. If it were me, I'd either stick with the X5 or stay with a sports coupe. But, I'm outside the target demographic (i.e. its definitely not a family vehicle).

i agree the X6 is useless in every conceiveable way. i like the more aggressive front and TTv8 but the rear is a complete waste. give me an X5 with that front and that engine  and i'd be happy (assuming i had like 80-90k to toss around)

This sounds a lot better. BMW kinda missed it when they released the new 4.8 IMO. The design of the new X5 is great, but Cayenne GTS and Turbo are the ultimate when it comes to a high performance production SUV.
It would have been nice to see the new 4.8 have had 400hp from the beginning. Coming out with a new car that had less HP than the previous X5 and a smaller gas tank was the wrong call.
Speaking of the gas tank, the range is going to SUCK with the M engine in the car! Hope they get a bigger tank, but they won't.

In its defense (since we own one), I really don't think the current BMW 4.8i was ever intended to go head to head with the more purposeful and sporty GTS or the crazy powerful Cayenne Turbo.

It's a family hauler, not a continuation of the older 4.8is, think of it more as a continuation of the 4.4i.

Yikes. That is just wrong for BMW to do that. It does seem like the tank empties fairly fast on our '08 X5 4.8i, compared to our '04 Cayenne S (26 gallon tank, which was awesome).

Weak!!!! I can't believe they did that. It's my wife's daily not mine, so I didn't realize it until now that it was that tiny.

I understand and agree. Although its difficult to say since the first 4.8 was release to compete. iinda like they did with the M5 back in the day.. As you can imagine BMW gets the short end of the stick when it comes to a SUV Shootout. Cayenne, Blazer SS, Jeep SRT, and if Audi releases the Q with the V-12 desiel in US, watch out, 500HP and 700+ torque.

The only reason I know about the tank size, was because range is a consideration for my next daily, replacing my 4.8. New X5 is 22.5, old X5 was 25.5 gals. When I found this out I decided to stay with my 4.8. Too Bad, I really like the way the new ones look.
