View Full Version : Lebron James signs with Miami

As everyone sat glued to the television Thursday night watching LeBron James' infomercial, it struck me that he completed a triple-double, and I'm not talking about joining Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade in Miami.

In the first 10 minutes, he tarnished his brand and image, became the most hated player in the NBA, and eliminated himself from ever being in the conversation as the best player of all time.

As a free agent, he had every right to play wherever he wanted to.

It's how he went about making his decision and that he felt he had to play on a "dream team" to win that elusive championship that will change how he's viewed.

What James did was a complete slap in the face to the fans and the city of Cleveland. There didn't seem to be much emotion or remorse for his decision. He said he was just going to do what was in his best interest, critics be damned.

LeBron has been referred to as "King James" since he was about 15-years-old, so he doesn't have to answer to the peasants surrounding his kingdom, or give them an explanation for why he was leaving.

But what does deciding to play in Miami with a "super team" do to his image as a basketball player and a global icon?

It says that he's not good enough to win by himself and that he needs other superstars to help put him over the top.

Nobody wins without other good players around them, but until now, nobody ever built their own team together from scratch like LeBron, Wade, and Bosh just did. Other teams were built over time, adding a piece here or there until the right ingredients came together to form a champion.

At 25, James thought the clock was ticking and it was time to win. So the big three of the free agent market conspired together to form an All-Star team.

LeBron seems like the kid on the schoolyard who got bullied and brought in his big brother to fight his battle for him.

Wade is his big brother now, expected to do for him what he couldn't do for himself.

Part of the joy of winning a championship is working hard to earn it, not having it handed to you. But I guess when everything has been handed to you for most of your life, you come to expect that.

For James, putting in the effort, the sweat, and the work, and building something while he lead the way would be so much more rewarding than this. Instead, he took the easy way out.

This is like the United States when we lost in the Olympics and sent the first "Dream Team" to bring back this country's honor.

But is what James did yesterday honorable? He sounded like Cleveland fans should feel blessed that they had him for seven years and all that he did for them. But what was that?

Just getting by on his natural talent and never developing a post-up or mid-range game? Failing to play up to his ability in the playoffs and seemingly quitting on the team at times? Getting to one NBA Finals and losing? Is that what Cleveland fans should be thankful for?

I guess James feels they should have felt graced by his presence, because that seemed to be the attitude he took last night.

Branding has been so important to LeBron, but after his spectacle yesterday, he is now Brand X.

He didn't help his image or his legacy with his cowardly move to South Beach. He is now the most despised member of the most hated team in sports.

He had other alternatives.

He could have gone to New York and joined Amar'e Stoudemire as the Knicks tried to rebuild their franchise. He supposedly always wanted to play on the grand stage in New York, and instead of being reviled, he would be revered for taking the initiative in trying to bring a championship back to New York.

He could have joined his buddy Jay-Z in New Jersey for a couple of years before they move to Brooklyn and tried to win something there. The Nets have some nice pieces in place with Devin Harris, Brook Lopez, and 2010 No. 3 overall draft pick Derrick Favors.

Or he could have made the smart, safe bet and gone to Chicago to team up with Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, and Carlos Boozer. The pieces were already in place in the Windy City.

By joining the Bulls, he could have put them over the top, but the bottom line is that he would have been the one credited with leading them to a championship.

That's not how it will be looked at in Miami. The Heat has been Dwayne Wade's team, and it still is. Wade is the alpha dog. Bosh is the lap dog, and LeBron is now in a sidekick role.

Perhaps that is the smartest move for him. His former coach Paul Silas commented on a radio show before the signing that LeBron doesn't have a killer instinct.

All the great ones do. Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Larry Bird, and Magic Johnson would trip their mothers to win a game.

LeBron doesn't have that in him, and that's why he will be a loser no matter how many championships he wins. His legacy will never be fulfilled.

He will never be in the conversation as the greatest player to ever lace up sneakers.

Perhaps the Chicago Bulls marketing campaign to get him to come to Chicago best describes the reality that is LeBron James.

In their effort to lure him to town, the Bulls' ad agency sent him a pair of Michael Jordan's sneakers along with the question, "Can you fill these shoes?"

His answer yesterday said it all—he can't, and he never will.

he's a great player no doubt... but not all great players become a LEGEND in the eyes of the people. And that whole "its not about the money bs", its still bs to me. He'll be making 80-90 million in Miami... i wish him the best though... i hope he can take the heat (Ha!) if all else fail :D

Jumping to conclusions! Maybe he does not want to fill MJ shoes, no will ever will btw, maybe he wants to make his own shoes meaning he does not want to be part of history, he wants to make his own history with the Heat, maybe. Like Eric said LJ is a great player and he still has a lot of years in him. We'll just have to seat back, relax and enjoy the show!:D

ps: Bynum needs to get real healthy next season if they're going to 3 peat.

Perhaps he wants to create a younger "the big three" in South Beach.
It's true that by joining the Heat he destroys his legacy..
But every superstar needs a star to help him out.
Michael had Scottie; Shaq had Kobe; Kobe has Pau; many more examples out there.
I guess the three of them wants to create a dynasty on a team that does not have a lot of history.

I mean, once Kobe and KG done with the NBA, they have the potential to be the most dominating team for more years to come....
That is a smart move, in my opinion.

He might hurt his image as a basketball icon by doing this move...
But hey, this thing would probably be gone in 2-3 years after playing with Miami..
Sooner than we expected, #3 #4 and #6 of Miami will be everything that we talk about in the NBA.

Really "mature" for Cavs owner to go public on how sour he was regarding LeBron's departure.

^^Wow on Dan Gilbert's comments. IMO, I can't blame Lebron on his decision. He is doing what will make him happy and ultimately may put him in the title contention. But everyone knows 3 stars, let alone 2 stars can not take a team to the championship. Supporting cast and defense wins championship and Miami is lacking these. They might be able to beat most of the mediocre team but not top teams like the Lakers, Orlando, etc.

At first thought, I was like damn the Heat is a one night stand team, it doesn't have history like the Celtics, Lakers and the Bulls, why'd he join that team. But then again I figured that he can do it.

Good point bradah, once those Championship rings starts to fill in his fingers people will start to like and cheer for him...Its business in the end.

honestly though...Lebron gave 7yrs of his career to a team (let alone filled the what would be empty seats in cleveland) that at best gave him mediocre teammates (Z, geriatric Shaq, West, etc..) and he put up with all that bs without crying and whining like a rapist we all have come to know real well.....Why was he blamed for betraying cleveland? Yes, he grew up in akron but how many max-players play in their hometown?? At least he stayed with the team that drafted him out of highschool instead of demanding to be traded to a big-market team on draftnight (now thats being an a-hole) and stayed for 7yrs.

#1 jersey for Bosh...
#6 for James
Poor Dorell Wright and Mario Chalmers (took #15, number he used in Kansas).

You bring an interesting point Ed, seems like all his hard work and dedication for 7 yrs was not enough for Cleveland, yet alone was critisize by the Cleveland Cavs owner of a quitter on the Eastern conference finals between Boston Celtics and yet wanted him to sign Lebron for a maximum $130 M for six years, kinda weird doesn't it?..

Chris, all I'm saying is that when you look at it, the people of cleveland should thank lebron for 7yrs of spotlight on that city because plain and simple, he doesnt owe them anything and honestly, when was doing something in your own best interest a taboo?? The guy just wants to win a championship (dont think he ever will). Alot of guys just hate him because he doesnt play for their home team (I still remember when everyone here in LA talks so much trash about the mailman and what a dirty player that guy was or how gp was such an a-hole but the minute they came to play for us all was forgotten and we embraced them like family...same with artest and lamar)

What was up with that super runway ceremony thing where the Super Fails walked down and everything.... They haven't won or proved anything yet so why the hell are they prancing around like they're some champions? The only champion I see in that group is D Wade. Honestly, the only superstar I see in that team. How can Bosh be labeled a superstar? What the hell has he done to deserve superstar status? Only brought the Raptors to the playoffs twice with no wins. LeBron, as we know, chokes under the pressure of playoffs, and can't handle the heat (heh heh) when the going gets tough. D. Wade is the only one there with champion experience, but is cowering behind Bosh and LeBron. Funny, they are all hoping that each other will help them win a ring, with them having no confidence in themselves to win a ring on their own.

Remember, there's only 3 of them (plus Miller or Shaq or whatever player they can find). The rest of their team isn't stacked enough to support them. So sorry team Super Fail, but I predict you won't make it through semi's this year.

Watching the 3 of them (LJ, Wade and Bosh) reminds me of the time when KG and Ray joined the Celtics. Keep in mind that Pat Riley is part of the Heat who have won championships with the Lakers and the Heat, maybe he can or will help them reach their goals. I believe in Lebron, and the performance he did when they played the Spurs in the finals will never be forgotten, he single handedly carried that team in that series and now with some real help like Wade and Bosh, we're just going to have and wait for us to see what is really going to happen! nuff said! :D

We also witnessed LBJ crash and burn against the Celtics this past season as well. I think that the Heat will still have a hard time against the Celtics and Magic next season.

it's Shaq's fault! Cavs used to be a full court team but since Shaq joined the team they became a half court team. Shaq is clogging up the middle where Lebron can always use to attack the basket and Shaq is also slowing down the team. Celtics are not getting any younger, Magics has a shot.

Five people in the basketball court that works as a well oiled machine always gets the job done... for us outsiders, it will be a wait and see if these "stars" will be able to put aside their egos, more importantly stay HEALTHY, and work as a TEAM of five and not just THREE.

Ever heard of the expression "TOO MANY COOKS SPOIL THE BROTH..." i wonder if this collaboration of talents/stars will become a perfect epitome of this idiomatic expression

it worked out well for KG, Ray and Pierce

Agreed. Too much ego and superstardom might get to them causing them to fail. Also someone has to be THE shining star in the team, and there can't be 3. We will most likely have to see D Wade and Bosh take a bow from the limelight and let LBJ do a lot of the work. So, ultimately it might be up to LBJ once again to push this team to win.

Also, like above, there is more than just those 3 on the court. Plus, they have to sit eventually as well because they are not going to play them for all 48 minutes of the 82 games. So it's up to the rest of the team too to win.

Poor Sportsmanship + self proclaimed Prima Dona = LBJ

Only "real" reason he's changing his jersey number is to spur his jersey sales. He's jealous Kobe is the #1 selling jersey. The whole MJ reason is only his puppet masters's (Carter) excuse.

what's AINOKEA mean?

Here is what MJ had to say about Lebron:
"There's no way, with hindsight, I would've ever called up Larry, called up Magic and said, 'Hey, look, let's get together and play on one team."

And Charles Barkley:
"I like LeBron. He's a great player. But I don't think in the history of sports you can find a two-time defending MVP leaving to go play with other people."
