have one of those image things for verification, or have them click a register me in the email they use, it may take people 3 mins to register now, instead of 1, but it should eliminate the spammers

Actually there is an image verification on the registration as well as you have to verify through email before you can actually use the site. People are just signing up these days and using them to spam.
