There are quite a few things to look at.
- Cooling system
- RTABs
- RSMs
- Vanos (in some cases)
There are a few others, but they wouldn't be specific to this car... Best thing to find is someone who has all the receipts for all the oil changes and scheduled maintenence to ensure you're getting a good deal.
Good luck!

Drive it into the ground. If it fails, drop in a new engine, fix the suspension, swap the tranny, or whatever.... and repeat.

I found this AFTER I got my car. There's a lot of good deals out there right now. Goodluck and keep us updated!

You should check the cruise control linkage on any 96 and check to see if it has all ready been replaced by BMW. I found out after I bought my car that the linkage was recalled and replaced on my car in 1998 but the thing is it is gone again so I had to replace on my own.

Is it expensive to replace? You should check the cruise control linkage on any 96 and check to see if it has all ready been replaced by BMW. I found out after I bought my car that the linkage was recalled and replaced on my car in 1998 but the thing is it is gone again so I had to replace on my own.
