Hi Guys, since we have a lot of people on here that are into photography i want to get a poll of what brand of cameras you use and why. I'm in the market for a nice DSLR camera (likely a Nikon D300 or D700) but would like some inputs from the more experience folks. There are other DSLR brands out there but want to focus on the top two (Nikon & Canon).
1 - Nikon
2 - Canon
3 - Other

canons and nikons are BOTH good.
I prefer canon.
Nikon lenses are harder to aquire and are more expensive for similar IQ qualities.
I currently use a Canon 5d, soon to be 5dmkII and possibly adding a 1dsmkII

I chose Canon simply because I felt more comfortable with the the layout (settings) and the feel of it. (30D Owner over here).
Both Canon and Nikon make great camera's but in the end it depends on what you feel more comfortable with. Go to your local camera store and hold them first before you make a choice! :)

The downside of going the opposite direction (Nikon) would be that you can't trade lenses with your buddies!

Can you fire the Nikon flashes with pocket wizards triggered by a Canon SLR?
I'm using the ST-E2 transmitter to fire a 580 EXII and 430 EX. I know it's not ideal due to line of sight requirements, but haven't had any problems.

That lens is such a heavy brick!
I'm happy with the 70-200 F/4 IS, but would love the bokeh of the F2.8, not currently willing to pony up the $$$, or lug the weight though.

24L is tempting due to the wide angle, but 35L is really versatile and good all arounder.
I took my kid bowling tonight with a bunch of dads and kids, and here is a shot of one of the kids, taken with the 35L and 580 EX II handheld.

^ Nice shot.
My 24-70L is my everyday/all purpose lens so I'm pretty used to carrying a brick. The 70-200 2.8IS isn't that much heavier than what I have. Such a money pit :(

with the STe2 i do not think so. with pocket wizards or radio poppers or ebay triggers, YES.
I wouldnt want to use the FLASH to trigger the other flash BECAUSE of line of sight.
If you want a nice strobist setup...http://strobist.blogspot.com/
check that out, lots and lots of information on strobist (off camera flashes)
keeps you away from softboxes and such!

;)
Currently it's 12 out of 13 with respect to the camera...
In all seriousness, I've shot both Canon and Nikon, and I think they are roughly equals. It comes down to personal preference, and then, it comes down to you shoot whatever body that you already have lenses for...

What did you go with for lights? If you could share brand and type? Looking at alien bees, I want something durable, light weight, easy to set up/handle.
Wondering when the 5D Mark II is actually going to ship, it was supposed to be November, now December...

The 5D is a little out of my price range, maybe in a few months I'll pick up a used unit. Looks like an awesome camera.
I went with AB's. I did quite a bit of research and AB's were the most affordable, reliable and IMO best option to go with.
I just picked up 2 B800's, with softboxes. Next is going to be wireless triggers (going to give AB triggers a shot) and also a vagabond.
Don't forget if you are student, or know someone who is a student, you can get 10% off the entire purchase.
Arrows
11-21-2008, 08:41 PM
Umbrella's are much easier to setup, it takes quite a bit for me to assemble the softboxes on my own. If you look at the Photo's section, TKC posted a thread with pictures of me using that setup with the softboxes, hopefully tomorrow I get to try it on a person!

Thanks Amit. I've only heard good things about AB's. Now, I'm going to figure out what a vagabond is...
I haven't decided whether to go softbox or umbrella, but I imagine the softbox reflection would be much less noticeable on a car than an umbrella reflection.
Arrows
11-21-2008, 08:45 PM
Softbox's produce much softer light compared to umbrella's, which is why I decided on softbox's even tho they are so much more of a pain and $$.
A vagabond is basically a battery pack for the AB's to use on location where you don't have access to a power outlet.
Arrows
11-21-2008, 08:46 PM
Another great thing about AB's is their trade in program. If you have a B400 and want a B800, you can upgrade just by paying shipping +$25+difference in cost between B400 and B800. I think that's awesome as well.
I've never used their technical service/customer service but I've heard it's top notch as well.
SYCO GT
11-21-2008, 09:13 PM
That's pretty cool that they allow upgrades. More people should do that, like V1. I heard Leica is trying to do that with the M8. How cool would that be for the 5D. Just bring it in, have them swap out the sensor, and get an upgraded camera for a few hundred.
Arrows
11-21-2008, 09:19 PM
That'll be sick. Leica.. way too expensive.. if people can afford that, upgrading is the least of their worries.
But AB's are on the right path, I've only used my setup once so far and love it, tomorrow I'll try to use it again :D
Wow, I just read through this whole topic and ive been lost the entire time... lol But i want a camera. Ill take donations when you guys get those new ones.

You can pick up a used XTi for fairly cheap nowadays with a kit lens.

We use to own a Nikon DSLR a while back, I loved the camera even though I had no idea what it was capable of. To bad we sold it, it had a decent lens.

Yeah, good point about Leica. It's interesting to see the Panasonic / Leica relationship in their point and shoots and the Leica pricing on the "upscale" twin. Crazy.
But, think about all the environmental waste from discarded camera bodies and other electronics. If you could replace the shutter, processor, and sensor, the cameras were effectively sealed against dust, so that they would last 10-15 years like the old stuff...

Not to mention I would be happy to let someone borrow a lens while we are at events if I was not using it. Big + since I have a 70-300 and a 100-400 both Imagine Stabalizers. The both the 300 and 400 are great for the track.

Nikon D200 here. They are both great brands. Get what you are comfortable with and what your friends shoot. If your friends shoot one brand you can learn from them and borrow glass!

I did some research on the D700 and with the price on the body @ $3200ish i think i'll stick to the D300 unless the body drop below $2k!
