I'm in the process of looking for an E60 M5 between 2006-2008 (Exterior has to be#1 White and #2 Black. Interior Black or Silverstone) and my budget is $40k. I prefer mileage to be under 45k and NO accident or body work.
Please let me know if you know anyone selling an M5 with those specs.
I would also like to know if there are any major differences between 2006 -2008 models?
Anything to look out for such as SMG issues or any major engine issues that I need to be aware of?
Thank you in advance. :) :) :)

Check out the many dealerships that are part of this MFest Family. You got Qais who'll be of help. You also got great people from Center BMW and also Pacific BMW. I'm sure any of those three options can help you.
As for the difference between 06 to 07 and 08 is that LCI kicked in 07 and up. And in regards to any major issues, all I can really think of is the fact that you'll be averaging 15 miles to a gallon.

Not much difference except for a few cosmetic upgrades, there's mix reviews of the earlier models being problematic, more power and etc. but trust me all of that is pure hear say and inconclusive...;)

It's a Myth (although it consumes more than the other current BMW series)...This is what I've been told and come to find out it's NOT the mileage the gas light, lights up too quick, compared to the E39 M5 it's just a tad bit less a little compromise for the V10 engine:buttrock:...I can get around 14-20+ mpg depending on how heavy my foot on the gas:D
Comparo between the
E39 M5 gas tank
18.5 gal. (70 liters), with reserve of approx. 2.5 gal. (10 liters)
E60 M5
18.5/70 (reserve 4g/15 liters)
E46 M3
16.4 US Gal = 62.07 L
Yeah, I was told gas mileage wasn't great.
I appreciate the feedback.

I roll from Sacramento to L.A. on occasion in my 2007 E63 M6, and I can average 19MPG @ 75MPH, no sweat. Yes, I did change my differential to the Dinan 3:91 LSD Differential, and still get reasonable mileage on the highway. Yes it is modded, although still NA. NEVER had a worry about the SMG!

I got the S3 tune, High Flow Air Mass Meter/Intake Assemblies, LSD, and Dinan cans that trip to Dinan. After leaving I did a little seat of the pants testing and found that the throttle response was better, and it wound up to higher RPM's quicker. Next trip to Dinan got the x-pipe and monoballs. Couldn't tell the difference other than the sound. Runs very strong on the track, especially with the KW V3's and scoops now. Never got "meatballed" for excessive noise above 92db at Laguna Seca. Love this setup! Just need the BBK now! I'd go for it Laidback!!!

I have slight whining noise on my Dinan Diff (3.45) under load especially...did you experience this one on your 3.91? thinking about the monoballs aswell:)

I have a very slight whining sound between 25 and 30 MPH. Can't hear anything when it's under load, though.

Mostly come in SMG tranny.
Manual transmission is rare.
Car is built for SMG anyway,

It's your choice at the time of purchase. You can probably find one with SMG (Sequential Manual Gearbox i.e. "paddle shifter"), or MT (Manual Transmission i.e. third pedal w/stick shift). Do your homework, and test drive one if you can. :)
