Jim, I think thats a fantastic idea :lolhit:
I think worst case scenario, if we go get some breakfast somewhere in Golden or drive up to Idaho Springs, and then get breakfast, and wait for the passes to get wet, thats it. We will probably be later arriving into Grand Junction for sure and then Beaver but whatever, its better then going way around. I looked at the cams and weather conditions on the southern mtn roads, and they look worse then I-70. Im fairly confident the roads will be wet, and if they have a light slush or slight snow, then we go 25mph.
We drive BMW's, doesnt anyone have some sense of car control even if your tires suck in the conditions?? We are Coloradoans damnit, not Californians :laughhard:

If the forecast holds true, 70% for snow showers tonight, Wednesday night and Thursday morning, I have no choice but to head south. It’s not a matter of driver skill, it's a matter of traction. Also, for those of us with a drop, any accumulation could damage the front end of our cars. I would rather take a longer route full of sunshine and enjoy the drive than have a white knuckle drive over snowy mountain passes. Also, if you guys wait for the snow to melt it might be the same time loss as going the southern route. If it is just wet, I’m all in for the original plan. Please PM me if anyone else would like to explore the southern route. The southern route is in the 70’s/80’s with no forecasted rain/snow at all. This truly sucks to split up the group, but I just don't want to risk damaging any of the cars in the snow.
Here is the link to the weather channel, it states that it will be snowy and windy Thursday morning.

I've started an alt. route thread - just in CASE - over on the other forum. We can still choose to take the I-70 route, I just want a backup plan.
Again, I really just want to go the I-70 route too, but I've driven these tires on snow and slush and it's not fun, and I would not want to be driving down Vail pass in slush on them.

We're cross posting everywhere, so I thought I'd post this handy link here: http://cotrip.org/roadConditions.htm?zoomPresetId=5 It will be the best guide for us as we decide at zero hour.

As of around ~830 this morning the roads were wet. I still think we proceed as scheduled and if anything we wait a little bit before heading up. Unless something drastic happens with the weather, it should be the same as today which was just like yesterday and the day before. The roads have been wet by around 8am over the passes. And that was ONLY over the pass they had issue, on approach ~5 miles in either direction. Other then that it was wet, so Im moving forward as planned and evaluating when we get there tomorrow. That website has a mobile page that works quite well, and should give us the info we need.

I'm gonna throw on my winters just to be safe. I-70 here we come. I'm only doing this because I have a super early flight on Monday (6am) and I really don't want to be driving for an additional 3 to 4 hours to take the alternate route and be just wrecked on Monday morning.
Duty calls...

Yeah, sadly it's only the passes that are an issue - I've been looking at all the I-70 cams the last few days and nights, and it's pretty dry elsewhere. Loveland pass was actually closed last night for a while - the problem is that it's "wet" and slushy but until the sun comes out it's still likely to be icy.
I'm still hopeful that it will warm up today and everything will be unicorns and rainbows :) But check the other thread if you want to see the alternate plans.

I think even if we get passed by semi's and we have to go 25-30mph then thats better then going all the way down and around. Slow and steady.
Not only is it the passes thats an issue, but like I mentioned its only ~5 miles on either side of the pass thats an issue. Thats why I think just nice and slow will be fine. And Loveland pass closing..pft, that always happens. I think it gets windy and they shut it down :lolhit:
I feel for Matt though, his summer tires may as well be drag slicks, so he doesnt have a choice. But now we have a tank to lead the way :thumbsup2:
I tend to agree, and will not be meeting at 6am as a result. Just makes more sense to depart at a more sane hour, with more sunlight on the roads.

So let's delay the departure a bit?
Dackz
04-20-2011, 01:05 PM
Okay....so we delay the departure to 730? Still, everyone needs to get over to the west side of town to meet up and such. Traffic is a pain in the ass at the time, so I still think meeting earlier and just hanging isnt such a bad idea. I will still be there early as I advise everyone else to do, even if you get there at 630, you'll beat traffic. So no plans are changing except after we all gather and have a chance to see the roads, we may leave later. I think that is a solid plan.
llis, your entitled to do whatever you desire, as is everyone else. So people want to wait around till 830 and try a go at it, thats fine. Unless the conditions end up really poor, I dont see a reason to wait that much longer. But to each their own.
My departure is now delayed due to mechanical issues. Hopefully I'll still make it to Vegas. Drive safely everyone!

Wow, that sucks. But yea, better here then in middle of nowhere. Hopefully its an easy fix. If not, the loaner program is an M for an M right?? :D Beat on their's instead of on yours.

Holy coming out of the woodwork batman! Good on ya though. If you change your mind, you know the details.
We plan on adhearing to schedule. And infact as I type this, Kathy Sabine says we are good to go. Not enough accumulation to cause any problems through the divide and mtns. So your more then welcome to come join us if you would like.

What an adventure I guess. We hit 4 seasons in 100 miles in Utah and 2 snow storms on the way out. On the way back we went around to NM and up. 16 hours later we made it home. Avg speed was nuts too but we made it. Stupid Mtns.

Bailey and I did the trip back via I-15 to I-70 in 11 hours 15 minutes. That included two stops, 1 in Beaver UT for gas and breakfast and another in Grand Junction CO for gas and lunch. No other stops and we still made that time. We left at 7am mountain and arrived at 6:15pm mountain.
I think the group could have all gone this way, but I understand the uncertainty of the weather and the reports. The weather folks really got that storm forecast wrong (idiots)

Yea, wish we would have instead but oh well. When they are calling for 10-20" of snow over the passes, thats not something to mess with. Too bad they blew it.

We left Monday morning and went the southern route. Somewhere near meteor crater Jason and his wife caught up to us and we caravaned back the rest of the way. About 15 hours total including gas and food stops...ugh! I'll start a photo thread elsewhere in this subforum and we can all post our pix there.
Only saw Gladius of the Colorado group.
BTW, whose black M6 w CO dealer plates was that? Beautiful car! (Yes, lots of beautiful cars.)

It was good to meet and talk to you. We are going to try to make a Denver event/drive this year.... Had a great time in Vegas, just wish we all could of had a little more time together!!!!
Just saw the MFest photos posted by EAS and all I can say is wow! Looks like everybody had a fantastic time. Definitely next year's MFest for me. Guess that will give me plenty of time to get some things done to my M3.
Let me know when there's a meet in Colorado and I'll try to be there. :)
