It seems radar detectors are considered essentially useless against laser, but what happened today will make me rethink that assumption. I was headed west on the 90 into Marina del Rey this afternoon and my 9500ix's laser warning went off, while it was sitting on my lap! (I was in the process of taking it down...). I was really surprised, picked it up and pointed it out the windshield at dash height. I was doing 70-ish and estimate that the laser alert sounded for 6 to 7 seconds straight, and going around the first curve that presented itself...there was CHP. So, no line of sight for a while, RD down below the dash, and an unwavering detection of laser. I'm really, really impressed!

In the off chance it could've been another car that alerted laser to you, cruise control, etc. It is pretty much impossible to pick up LIDAR scatter around a corner let alone with it on the windshield. If the CHP is the source, that's impressive but will most likely never happen again =p LIDAR alerts are the worst to hear, I almost **** my pants every time it goes off even if it's a false, and my brakes hate me.

This is correct. You cannot pick up LIDAR around a corner. If you do receive any LIDAR that has bounced from a window, you will have to be much closer to the source. LIDAR does not work like radar. Now Radar dectectors emit signals, not just receive. When your radar detector in your lap, it picked up its own signal, causing the laser portion of the dectector to go off. This is common.
This happens to be 4-6 times a month when I start my car in the garage. Although it only happens when I park front in first!
Phiberglass is also correct that many cars set off the laser portion, Lexus, Mercedes and FX Infinities are the biggest violators.
I will also let you know that laser/ LIDAR does not last for 5-7 sec, the bursts from the LIDAR gun are much quicker.
LIDAR:
I will say I have seen a HUGE increase in the usage of LIDAR in my area, freeways and city streets. Its really scary

Great explanation. It is definitely increasing and becomes a bigger threat each day.
I was traveling south on the 5 freeway during my usual commute and on the off chance I was looking in my rear view mirror trying to make out some headlights as were gradually cresting up a left hill turn. Right when I bring my eyes back I see a LEO sitting in the center dividing in a turn-around shooting LIDAR at both sides which looked to be a Stalker unit. I was going about 80mph and got no alert. He didn't even bat an eye at me so I'm not sure if I he tagged me or not (most of the time I'll receive an alert from the RX 65 when close, although it's give and take with LIDAR).
I'm definitely thinking about picking up a LIDAR jammer (most likely Laser Interceptor) sometime in the future.

.
Last week traveling North on the 73 Toll Road, 11:30 on a Sunday night, he was sitting in the center with no lights on and shot me with LIDAR. I was only going 75, he did not come after me, clearly looking for bigger fish that night.
As a FYI, Laser jammers are illegal in Ca.

v1 ftw!
I have a question for anyone out here that might be able to answer it . I have a Beltronic Pro RX 65 Radar Detector I will say that it has saved me many time saving me lots of money when it comes to speeding ticket . But there is one area that this radar detector dose very very poor in and that's when it comes to Fresno California CHP and Frenso Police useing a Lidar gun . I was behind a Nissan 350z traveling on CA 99 north doing right around 78mph When the Nissan 350Z slammed on the brakes do to a CHP motorcycle unit parked under a bridge under a under pass shooting Lidar he picked up the 350z with it and passed me with his lights on and was pulling him over. Then waved me over as well ticketing both of us even knowing he never got me on radar at all which I felt it was BS and he said I was going 81 when I had told the officer that I was going 78 mph and still ticked me for the other guys speed of 81 mph he clocked him at. but he said he never got me on radar just the guy in the 350z ;( Ok now my question I feel I have a decent radar detector for the most part other then the lidar guns some cops use. I was thinking about upgrading to the Escort 9500xi gps unit is it really worth the money to take the jump . Will this Radar Detector work any better when it comes to Lidar laser guns or NO ??? I want a radar detector that dose everything mine dose plus work really good when it comes to the lidar laser guns ........ Please give me any good advice you might have if you own a 9500 xi dose it work good when it comes to lidar laser guns or not???
