BMW Tri-turbo set up

Hello All,
BMW has made a big deal about their new tri-turbo arrangement, but the suggestion of it has left at least me, scratching my head wondering exactly how they're going to employ three turbos. I found a great animation showing the exhaust and boost flow in the new three turbo set up on the M550d diesel engine. There is most likely going to be a similar set up on the next generation M3. There are rumors that one of the three turbos on the upcoming M3, will actually be electrically powered (making it a 'supercharger' by definition, I know). Still, it's pretty cool to watch.

Thanks, Jon

There's still no official word on the actual engine going into the next gen M3. BMW applied for patents on both an "electric turbo" and a twin turbo reverse flow V6. The talk going around at the ride and drive said that BMW wouldn't do a V6. Who knows? BMW also owns the right to the Triumph automobile brand, but they're not doing anything with that either. About the only advantage I can see to doing a V6 in the M3 is that it would shift the weight of the engine back slightly in the chassis.
