When I first turn the key I can hear a "whrrrrrrrrr" noise for a few seconds, but not when I shift. When I shift although the position changes the vehicle will not get out of "R" and the noise only happens the first time I turn the key.

Change what fluid?

One way to check if your pump is healthy or not is to hear the pump noise when you unlock the car after parking for awhile.
There is an electronic noise after the car is unlocked; the pump is being charged by car battery.
SMG pump requires abudant amount of power in order to function properly.

This is also why e46 m3 battery will die if the car is not being driven for few months.
Worst case scenario is your SMG pump has already announced its retirement.

Alright, well I did replace the really and battery so I'm embarking upon the "replace the SMG hydraulic unit" journey.

Before I spend loads of money on the actual hydraulic unit itself, I have a quick question.

During my search for knowledge related to my issue, I found a thread related to a similar issue on an E46 325I. Instead of buying the SMG Hydraulic Unit on the M3 , the individual simply replaced the SMG Pump.

Are the SMG transmissions for the E46 all the same? Could I replace just the pump or, because its an M, do I have to replace the entire hydraulic unit? Anyone have any experience with this?

Hey, I drive an 03 e46 smg...my car would get into gear but miss shift and all sorts of crazy things happened. I changed the smg gear placement sensor and when my EML light came on, changed the top tps (throttle positioning sensor) and that fixed all the issues. I changed the pink relay, however in 100+ degree weather I still go into limp mode if Im stuck in heavy traffic =/
