Faymester's stay on Oahu 2011

Mum and I are more than likely going to Hawai'i again this summer and we were thinking of splitting our time between Waikiki and somewhere on Maui.

My question is: where is the happening place on Maui?

honestly, there is no such thing as a happening place on maui. it is more of a place you would go to relax, see nature, etc. the closest thing I think is lahaina, but it is still pretty docile. on oahu, you are able to have both the city and the country, so if you get tired of seeing tourists, you can go to another part of the island to get away. make sure you rent a car though, as getting to around will be much easier. my favorite place to go is ewa beach, cause i fit right in as long as i don't talk. but i am mainly there cause my cuz is there, and we hit up surf spots like barber's point...

We've gone to Oahu every year for the last 4years but since this years' stay may be almost 3 weeks I thought it might be fun to spend a week on one of the other islands; so I basically just need the most happening place even if the whole place is not happening at all because to get stuck in the least happening place on a non-happening island may drive me completely bonkers.

I'll look into Lahaina; more thoughts on the happening place(s) on Maui?

^ bars and clubs, shopping, good places to eat. I think Mum and I have done most of the 'places to see' stuff over the years.

I've not been to the Big Island, I hear that's more or less the business place and not so much for playing.

I can tell you right now Big Island might not be the best of choices. I mean Hilo was voted as the drunkest city in the US(I think I kinda helped with that statistic lol). But yeah Hilo has like one club but I wouldn't really call it a club compared to those on Oahu or the mainland. It is called Karma right now as it has had 2 previous names in the past 2 years. It can be a fun if you don't get too plastered. But there are some other bars around town that are a bit more chill to just sit drink and do some karaoke or play pool.

On the Kona side I haven't really been to any of the bars but I heard Lulu's is good and there is another place that has an arcade and indoor bowling alley that is kinda geared to the 21+ crowd.

I would say if you want to check out Big Island at least check out Kona. Some tourists tend to go Hilo for a couple nights and then drive over to Kona either Ka'u way or along Hamakua Coast.
