This is the display out in front of Nissan of Bakersfield...
I guess someone turned in a older 5 series? This just breaks my heart!
Why'd the put it in there? Why Why? I pass by this everyday to/from home!

That even qualifies? WTF, my 88 5 series... lousy e28, didn't qualify by a single mpg.

Yeah the E39 540i is eligible but only the ones from 98 and older.

I can understand why someone would junk it... I've seen 540i models that haven't been taken care of and when it comes to replacing worn suspension parts, steering parts, fixing oil leaks, etc, it can be around $3000-$5000 in repairs.

I have to agree probably didn't have the money to keep repairing it. But it does break the heart of the E39 lover.

If it was in excellent condition and low miles.. then yes maybe especially if the 540i is a manual transmission and has an alusil engine block.
