CF Fabric Wrapping DIY Tips And Links

I made this thread a while back over on 1Addicts and thought i'd share it over here to help you other E82/E9x guys, i don't know how to remove the trim on other models but the wrapping process will be the same

Okay so I made THIS thread in the photos section on my recently black CF fabric wrapped interior trim pieces and a lot of people have been asking me questions on it, there's something like this on E90 Post but nothing on here so I thought i'd make one for my fellow 1er owners that would like to do this modification themselves.

There's no official DIY thread for 1ers but there are some for 3ers and this thread REALLY helped me in the wrapping process:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=253665 (Includes all other DIY links)

This thread helped me on wrapping corners:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=196996

And for you guys wondering if it is reversible the answer is YES!:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=180903

For taking apart the trim pieces i used these DIY's that Andy@LeatherZ made and interior trim tools that I borrowed from a friend that got them from eAs. They are exactly like the ones Andy is using in the DIY's and are VERY helpful so I recommend buying/using them.
Various Trim Pieces Removal
Remove E-Brake Boot

In order to take off the trim piece that surrounds the ash tray you have to take off the center console:
http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=213833

I bought my fabric from Euro-Dyne

The adhesive that most people use including me is 3M Super 77. When you buy this adhesive i would recommend buying the can that is black and red like in the link, i bought mine at Michaels (black and purple can). They are the same price but the black and red can is larger and that's always better right? I gave 3M a call about this and they said that the cans are different because they market the product to different consumers. I would also recommend picking up a roll of painters blue/masking tape to tape off anything you don't want to be sprayed with adhesive. It also helps with keeping things clean.

I hope this thread can help all you guys looking to do this yourself. this was the first time I ever wrapped fabric on anything so it was pretty intimidating at first and a little hard to jump into but when I finally got the guts to try this on my brand new BMW I found that it wasn't bad AT ALL. The only big tip I would recommend is TIME! Take your time on wrapping every piece and take it one section at a time. it took me a little less than a week to complete since I only wrapped about 1 trim piece a day and let them dry overnight before re-installing. When you're done all the time spent on it will be well worth the effort. GOOD LUCK!

Be careful with the 3M 77. I have wrapped hundreds of sets in dinoc and the cf from Euro-Dyne. I have seen the 3M 77 and the 3M 90 both "lift" or "let go" in higher temps. Just an FYI.

yeah i also noticed in higher temps it does get soft but the only place i get problems is on my ash tray but i'm going to replace that soon with a cubby hole. what adhesive would you recommend that won't lift in heat?

You have to get into the commercial grade stuff. It is not something you can buy at like a Lowes or hardware store.

Hiya

There's some excellent links to some quality work that's been done by DIY enthusiasts and I've seen them before quite some time back.

I Import the fabric (with very special thanks to Jo / 415 Banker!) and I make it available to UK BMW guys (Chris / Laidback knows my forthcoming setup)

Now I spent some considerable time testing the adhesive I sell for use with the fabric before I made it available - I'm within the Car Audio sector as well as expanding into other BMW related goodies so I'm in touch with many of the UK's well known industry experts. The adhesive I tested, which is also temperature resistive to 125F is from a US manufacturer called "select products" and heres there site
http://www.selectproducts.com/site/index.php

I'm unsure if they'll sell their products directly to consumers, I believe they sell to install shops etc only. The adhesive is called "ADH 120" and they do an even higher temperature resistive version "ADH 225"

The adhesive is a little tricky to work with, it sprays like silly string, so can get a little messy, however I recommend it due to it's industrial level formulation and it's heat resistive properties. You guys in California have warmth and heat pretty much all year round so makes sense to use the correct grade adhesive for the job.

Other's have used the 3M 77 stuff, and as per Billy at Beamer Evolution above mentions, there's the risk of bubbling and lifting when using a non temperature resistive glue.

I'm sure one of the MFest sponsors could arrange something with Select Products USA to help everyone out here?! I deal with Select Products UK, else I'd have definitley sorted something out for you guys

Cheers, Dennis! West London UK!
